Post 7: Academic Writing in College vs High School
As a current high school student myself, I can personally tell you in detail on how my English classes are like at my school compared to this class that I am taking right now through dual enrollment. I think the biggest difference for me was the use of AI. In high school, teachers often strictly prohibit the use of AI in any means. However, in college, especially this class, I feel like the restrictions are much more loose and Professor. Hamon does an amazing job in providing us with the freedom to use assistance from Gemini, which I have had great help from personally. Another difference is the type of style the students use in their academic writing. As Kate would say, "writing in various academic and professional contexts needs to be more flexible, sophisticated, and subtle than writing for high school English classes. In college, you should start using first-person pronouns in your formal academic writing, where appropriate" (Maddalena, 180). Like this, high school students are taught that first person should not be used because the writer needs to be objective on the topic, but as Kate describes it, sometimes, using first person can be a more effective style of writing in academics.

Well done for taking high school and college classes. Hopefully that will help you graduate early and get ahead of the normal college experience. I agree with you in thanking Dr. Hamon for teaching us to use Gemini to assist in writing our paper. I have found that each time I use Gemini, I actually like what it has said better then I do my own words. Best of luck in all of your classes.
ReplyDeleteYoungjun, I applaud you for dual enrollment first of all. I wish I took advantage when I was in high school, and I appreciate how you’re able to compare this class with your current high school class. And hopefully your writing only continues to improve and you progress your education with outside sources for help like Gemini and quotes from writers like Kate informing us how first-person can be more effective in our academic writings.
